What is a ThinkIn?

Our ThinkIns are not panel events. They’re live and unscripted conversations held in the newsroom that you can come along to and have your say, in-person or online. Join us and our expert guests to investigate the stories that matter. We call it organised listening, and it’s at the heart of what we do.

General

Are ThinkIns recorded?

We record all our ThinkIns to make them available to watch later on our website and for marketing. If you need any more info, just write to our ThinkIn team.

How do I get involved?

ThinkIns are open to anyone, regardless of whether you’re a member or not. If you’re not a member already, tickets to our Digital ThinkIns cost £10, or you can join us in person at our London newsroom for £15.

Member or not, head to the page of the ThinkIn you’d like to come along to and click the ‘Book a ticket’ button.
All of our ThinkIns are available to join online, and some in person as well.

How can I change my ticket type after I’ve booked?

To upgrade a Digital ThinkIn ticket to a Newsroom one, all you have to do is head back to the ThinkIn page that you initially booked your ticket on, click the green ‘You’re booked’ button, then click ‘Upgrade to attend in person’.

If you’ve booked a Newsroom ticket but can no longer attend or would like to switch to a Digital ticket, get in touch with the ThinkIn team.

Hints and tips

– Remember to enter your full (real) name so that the editor can introduce you if you’d like to contribute.
– Your microphone will be automatically muted when you join. This makes it easier to hear what’s going on.
– You can choose to have your webcam switched on or off.
– If you’d like to share a point of view in writing, you can type it in the chat function.
– You can also ‘raise your hand’ if you’d like to speak. The editor will bring you in when they can.

Newsroom ThinkIns

We’re delighted to welcome members to our newsroom in Fitzrovia for in-person ThinkIns.

How does it work on the evening?

When you get to our newsroom, you’ll be checked in by a member of the Tortoise team and offered a complimentary drink. Before the ThinkIn begins, you’ll have the opportunity to mingle with other Tortoise members and staff. Afterwards, you’ll be able to meet the special guests of the night.

ThinkIn audiences range from smaller, cozy audiences to jam-packed, much bigger audiences. Regardless of the size of our audience, you’re guaranteed a warm welcome, stimulating conversation and a great evening.

Where do I go?

Our newsroom is located at:
Fora
22 Berners Street
London
W1T 3LP

What if I cannot join in person?

All in-person ThinkIns will be live-streamed, so you can just join online if you prefer.

Digital ThinkIns

Our digital ThinkIns use Zoom. It’s an online video conferencing and group messaging platform that means you can see the editors and guests talking to one another live and make a point, by typing in the chat function or by talking on your webcam.

How do I join a digital ThinkIn?

Step 1 – Get yourself set up

It’s a good idea to download the application onto your laptop or phone before the ThinkIn starts.

If you’re using your mobile phone, it’s easy. Just visit the App Store or Google Play store and download ZOOM Cloud Meetings free of charge.

If you’re using a laptop, it’s a bit more fiddly. Here goes…
– Go to Zoom’s download centre
– Click Download under ‘Zoom Client for Meetings’
– If it doesn’t pop up automatically, visit the downloads folder on your computer and click on Zoom to install the programme.
– Click Continue through each stage to complete the installation

Step 2 – Register for the ThinkIn

You’ll find upcoming ThinkIns listed on both our website and in the Tortoise app. Register for any ThinkIn you’d like to join in the same way as usual, by clicking on the “Book a ticket” button.

Step 3 – Join the conversation on Zoom

We’ll mail the link out to you in your booking confirmation email. When the ThinkIn is due to start, click through on that link to open Zoom and join. If you join early,  you’ll go into a waiting room. We’ll open the ThinkIn a few minutes before its scheduled start time to give you a chance to see the other members who are taking part.

Code of conduct

If everybody agreed about everything, there’d be no point in having a ThinkIn. All opinions, even those that are ‘unpopular’, are treated with courtesy and respect.
